Why use a rubric?
Rubrics are increasingly being embraced in legal education as a way to
- provide transparency for students in how they will be assessed;
- ensure consistency across graders (especially in courses using multiple graders);
- ensure consistency between student submissions in the way each is graded (thereby reducing grade appeals or student confusion and increasing fairness); and
- reduce time and effort on the grader’s part by offering significant feedback to students, without requiring substantive, individualized feedback on each submission.
