The excitement continues to build regarding our Legal Residency Program, and for good reason. We are getting an amazing response from Residency placement sites (a.k.a. potential employers) that are eager to bring MHSL students on board for unbelievable Residency experiences. Here’s just a bite size sample of some of the awesome opportunities we have waiting for you to participate in during Spring Semester 2018:
Judge Mark C. Vandelist Judge of the LeSueur County District Court. Judge Vandelist is the sole judge in this county which means he handles all of the cases filed in this district court. As a Resident that means you will have an incredible opportunity to get a vast amount of litigation exposure including criminal, civil, probate, mental help, juvenile, property and family law matters. Plus, you will get to see litigation from the Court’s perspective while at the same time having an opportunity to observe trial attorneys try cases, make oral arguments and have other contacts with the Court.
Federal Defender’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington. The Chief Federal Defender in this office is a Mitchell graduate that relocated from the Federal Defender’s Office in the District of Minnesota to take over the office in the Eastern District of Washington. This Residency provides a student with opportunities to make real live appearances in Federal Court for detainer hearings, first appearances, Motion Hearings and maybe even trials. You will also have real time contact with clients, Federal Magistrate Judges and Article III District Court Judges. If you are interested in going into criminal defense as a practice area, just imagine having an opportunity to appear and represent client in Federal Court, participate in proffer interviews, negotiate case settlements, make oral arguments and even more …. all before you graduate from law School. If you are looking for experience in the criminal law arena, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Maybe you’re the student that wants to return to a rural community and join a small firm or start your own law office after you graduate? Well if that’s you, we have the perfect Residency for you as well! One of our alum’s has a practice in Northern Minnesota that works almost exclusively with framers and their families to help them figure the best ways to handle their farming businesses and plan the business succession for the next generation of farmers. This Residency will provide a student with an amazing opportunity to work one on one with a solo practitioner who has created a Regional Reputation as the Go-To attorney for farmers. Did you say you might want to add public speaking as part of your practice? Great, because this attorney speaks as a regular part of her practice and what better way to learn the business of speaking than from a professional speaker. If you’re looking for experience working in a small town law practice helping farmers with their business and estate planning matters, then this is the ideal residency for you!
Are you interested in Health Law? If so, I have the perfect Residency placement for you! One of our placement partners is a regional long-term healthcare provider with 55 locations across Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas, South Dakota and Wyoming. This Residency placement will provide the student with the opportunity to work directly in the business’s Office of the General Counsel. If you’ve done your research, you know that getting an opportunity to work directly in the OGC is no easy task. In this Residency, not only will you get that opportunity, but the OGC is small enough that you will get a chance to gain exposure to all types of issues that come through that office. Those issues include employment, contractual, litigation, intellectual property, and a whole host of other business related issues. If you’re thinking a career in Health Law is in your future, just imagine how cool it would be to get this level of exposure to multiple areas and issue all at the same time…. Before you graduate from law school. How would that look on your resume? Pretty dang good, right?!?
