The Public Action Law Society (PALS) at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law would like to invite Mitchell Hamline School of Law students to participate in this year’s Alternative Spring Break in Memphis, Tennessee.
Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity to build a community among law schools and exchange ideas and perspectives among students. Last year, students from six different law schools participated and provided pro bono services to the Memphis community.
During Alternative Spring Break, students may participate in one of eight specialized tracks which are supervised by local attorneys. Those tracks include: Health Law, Elder Law, Family Law, Criminal Law, Veterans Law, Juvenile Law, Immigration Law, and Research and Writing. Within the specialized tracks, students provide pro bono services to individuals in the Memphis community. Each year Alternative Spring Break has a theme which serves to educate law students on a particular issue in the community. This year’s theme is “Averting Crisis: Mental Health Interventions for Improving Our Justice System.” The goal is to have a discussion about addressing mental health in our justice system to better serve the public.
During the week, students are provided with breakfast and lunch. Students are responsible for their travel to and from Memphis; however, their lodging and travel to and from the law school will be provided. Alternative Spring Break will begin with an opening reception on Sunday, March 4th and end with a closing reception on Thursday, March 8th.
Applications are due on January 19, 2018. Please see attached for the application, draft master schedule, and this year’s ASB flyer. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact Sarah Belchic at svblchic@memphis.edu.
