Legislative Intern – Fall 2021 – Spring 2022
World Without Genocide is a human rights organization headquartered at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul. We provide education about past and current conflicts and advocacy at local, state, and national levels for policies and legislation to protect innocent people, prevent genocide, prosecute perpetrators, and remember those whose lives have been affected by genocide. Legislative Intern – Fall 2021 – Spring 2022
• 10-12 hours per week, September 7, 2021 – May 15, 2022, on a flexible schedule to be determined with the Associate Director and Executive Director.
• Unpaid; undergraduate students can arrange course credit in relevant disciplines. Students at the University of Minnesota may qualify for CLA funding. Law students can arrange for credit in independent study.
Responsibilities
• Support World Without Genocide’s legislative agenda at the Minnesota state legislature -:
arrange meetings, research related bills and policies, and generate public awareness and support through speaking at programs, design and implement in-person letter-writing campaigns, make public statements, network with key media, and related activities.
• Prepare materials for web support of the legislative agenda.
• Engage with local organizations to arrange issue support.
• Participate in press conferences, coordinate participants for legislative committee hearings, and attend events as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
• BA (or currently pursuing a BA degree) in relevant field including history, political science, global studies, etc., a law degree, or currently pursuing a law degree.
• Clear, effective, and professional written and oral communication skills.
• Effective time management and organization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail, good problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well independently.
• Experience working in a professional capacity with diverse individuals and organizations.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Proof of Covid vaccination.
• Access to transportation for regular visits to the Minnesota capitol and to World Without Genocide office.
• Commitment to legislation and civic engagement to promote social justice.
Desired Qualifications
• Work experience at the Minnesota legislature or on political campaigns.
• Experience with civic organizations.
• Knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, and/or video software.
