The Northwestern Tax Program has completed its second year as the Academic Affiliate of the Tannenwald Writing Competition, and in that capacity, we will continue assisting the Tannenwald Foundation and the American College of Tax Counsel with administering the competition for 2025.
Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., and designed to perpetuate his dedication to high-quality legal scholarship, the Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full- or part-time law school students in J.D., LL.M., and other graduate law programs. This is the 24th year of the competition, and over 600 entries have been received since its inception. All submissions are reviewed by a panel of tax professors and practitioners.
Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules. Each paper requires a faculty sponsor, and the submission deadline is July 11, 2025.
Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 are typically awarded to the top three papers, and the winner also receives a complementary trip to the ABA Tax Section Midyear Meeting to receive their award in person at the ACTC meeting. Questions can be directed to Genevieve Tokic, Faculty Coordinator, at this email address. Submission information is available on our website.
