The Elder Law Certificate educates practicing attorneys and industry professionals about the complex legal and policy issues surrounding the aging population.
You’ll develop the skills necessary to better serve your clients. Learn to approach elder law problems from a multi-disciplinary perspective, gain better access to resources, and be more familiar with the benefits of the various care models available to seniors. Understand the issues facing aging people and how to promote discussion about—and response to—these issues.
All courses are delivered online to fit your schedule.

Course of Study
Take four sequential courses online over 12 weeks.
- Overview of Aging and Elder Law (three weeks)
- Government Benefits and Long-Term Care Regulation (three weeks)
- Assisted Decision Making and End-of-Life Considerations (three weeks)
- Harm and Remedies (three weeks)
Students have many opportunities to interact with faculty and one another in discussions and hands-on exercises. There are no scheduled dates or times when all students must be online concurrently.

To reserve a place in the program, a $250 deposit is required, unless otherwise advised.

Tuition
- Tuition is $2,500
- Financial aid is available to those who qualify: Certificate/Non-Degree Loans
- Non-federal loans requested for certificate programs can be certified for the cost of the program only. Students are allowed to increase the non-federal loan for the purpose of obtaining a computer with the completion of the 1-Time Computer Purchase form with supporting documentation.
Continuing Education Credits
Social Work continuing education credits are available.
This program is pending approval from the National Association of Social Workers
This program is approved for 15 On-Demand CLE credits (including 1 credit for Ethics) from the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education.

This program is approved for 16 CE hours by the Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators (BENHA).

Learning Objectives
- Understand the governing regulations and their impact on facilities and individuals
- Examine the options for end-of-life decisions and articulate the differences and consequences of each
- Understand harm, breach, and available remedies and the differences between criminal and civil complaints
- Analyze fraud and abuse claims and practice issue spotting in contracts and agreements
- Analyze the statutes and regulations pertaining to vulnerable adult maltreatment and identify the signs of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation
- Understand how to identify possible resources, and develop plans/options to address client/patient concerns
