On behalf of Professors Colombo and Whitelaw, I invite you to apply to participate in the 12th annual Health Law Regulatory & Compliance Competition, which will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. We are thrilled that the competition will be in-person after several years of a virtual format.
Professors Whitelaw and Colombo will serve as coaches for the competition. They are planning for two teams of 2-3 students each to participate in the competition. Please send me an email of interest by Friday, November 18th. If you have a team in mind, submit your email of interest as a team. Individual emails of interest are also encouraged. Professors Whitelaw and Colombo will select the teams and notify all interested students by Friday, November 25th.
Please Note: Eligible students must have completed the Health Care Compliance Institute by December 2022 and be a current MHSL JD student.
Workload expectations: Teams will be expected to practice at least once per week with Whitelaw and Colombo (each practice session 1-1.5 hrs) for 4-5 consecutive weeks. Practice sessions will be scheduled early and will take into account existing commitments. Teams will also be expected to work informally outside of scheduled practices. Total time commitment is between 2.5-3.5 hours per week for ~5 weeks. Students participating in this competition are eligible to register it as 1-credit for spring 2023.
This in-person competition gives law students interested in practicing in the field of health law and compliance the chance to navigate through the complex regulatory landscape of health care law, including compliance with health care regulations and food and drug law. Competing students will dissect a timely and challenging fact pattern and receive detailed feedback from practicing regulatory and compliance attorneys in the field of healthcare. This competition does not require any substantive submissions before the day of the competition.
The top ranking teams will receive prizes, courtesy of the American Health Law Association, including $500 per person for the 1st place team and $400 per person for the 2nd place team. Winners will also receive memberships for the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) and The American Health Law Association (AHLA).
Professors Whitelaw and Colombo have enthusiastically been coaching teams for this competition for many years and have enjoyed much success. Last year, an MHSL team received 2nd place among a highly competitive field of teams from top health law programs.
This is a great way to build your credentials, network, and have fun. Please let me know if you have any questions!
