Legal observers’ primary role is to monitor police conduct at demonstrations, which entails documenting use of force, arrests, and more. This training is for NLG members and allies that are willing and able to follow our protocol, who both have not yet been trained as an NLG legal observer, and those who have but would like a refresher.
(Please note that the NLG engages in power analysis, and therefore does not provide legal support for demonstrations put on by individuals or groups with intentions to uphold systems of oppression.)
The National Lawyers Guild is a national bar associated that was founded in 1937 and is the oldest progressive bar association in the U.S. The NLG’s mission is to use law for the people, uniting lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights and the rights of ecosystems over property interests.
