In January 2023, James A. Barnum, WMCL ‘84, retired as vice president / senior counsel with St. Paul-based Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. Prior to joining Hubbard in 1991, Barnum first clerked for U.S. District Judge Edward J. Devitt (D.Minn.) then practiced as a litigation associate with Leonard Street and Deinard (now Stinson) and Jones Day. From 2004 through 2013 Barnum served as an adjunct professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law, teaching I.P.: Entertainment Law. Also during this period he served as a charter member of the board of advisors to WMCL’s Intellectual Property Institute and as president of the Art & Entertainment Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. In 2022 the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information presented Barnum with its first ever John Borger Freedom of Information Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his “leadership in support of open government and the people’s right to know.”
