Mitchell Hamline is proud to honor the impact of Professor Emerita Marie Failinger
with the Marie Failinger Initiative for Ethics, Justice, and Technology

Marie Failinger was an influential scholar of ethics, justice, religion and law, and democracy; a champion for vulnerable communities; and long-time steward of the Journal of Law and Religion. Prior to her passing in October 2025, she spent four decades teaching and writing about justice and fairness. She devoted her career to examining the moral foundations of law, asking how legal systems can uphold dignity, fairness, democratic values, and justice, particularly for those most vulnerable.
Today, Mitchell Hamline is honoring Failinger’s legacy by building the future of legal education with the Marie Failinger Initiative for Ethics, Justice, and Technology.
The initiative will:
- Anchor Mitchell Hamline’s work at the intersection of justice and technology
- Focus on ethics and professional responsibility in technology enabled law practice
- Address fairness, bias, and due process in AI-assisted legal systems
- Emphasize the rule of law and democratic values in a digital legal environment
The program elements may include:
- Failinger Fellowships for students interested in AI, technology, ethics, and justice
- Research on fairness, bias, due process, and AI in courts
- Annual Failinger Lecture on AI, Technology, Ethics, and Justice
- Student learning opportunities focused on public ethics, democratic law, and responsible innovation
