The IRS Chief Counsel’s office in St. Paul is seeking students currently known as “Mitchell” or “Hamline” law students for Spring 2016 externships. The work will involve federal tax law research, U.S. Tax Court trial preparation and a possible opportunity to try a U.S. Tax Court case. Students who are enrolled at least half time, have taken (or are currently taking) the basic Income Tax course and are in the top 1/3 of their class are eligible. The externship is for a minimum of 3 credits and requires a minimum of 145 hours of work over the semester. (That’s an average of about 11 hours per week over 13 weeks.) A larger number of hours for more credits may be possible (figure about 50 hours per additional credit).
If you’re interested, email Prof. Denise Roy as soon as possible. To apply, email the following to Meg Daniel at meg.daniel@mitchellhamline.edu: (1) resume, (2) transcript (unofficial is fine), and (3) a cover letter addressed to Prof. Roy. The tax law faculty will select students to recommend to the Chief Counsel’s office. That office may conduct interviews and will make the final selection. If you have questions, please contact Professor Roy.
If you may be interested in an IRS Chief Counsel’s office externship for semesters after Spring 2016, send an email to that effect to Prof. Roy, who will notify you when future opportunities arise. The externship is usually available every summer, fall and spring semester.
