A limited number of externship placements are available with federal district court and magistrate judges during the Spring 2017 semester. The externship may be taken for 2, 3 or 4 credits, requiring either 105, 150 or 200 work hours during the semester. The number of credits will depend in part on the preferences of participating judges. In addition, there is an on-campus biweekly classroom component, at a time to be determined that can accommodate the externs’ schedules.
Students must apply to be selected for the program. To apply, send an email to Karen Vander Sanden, (karen.vandersanden@mitchellhamline.edu) attaching a resume, transcript and carefully composed statement (limited to one page) that explains your interest in participating in the program. Applications will be reviewed by members of the Judicial Clerkship Committee. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 28, 2016.
Selection is competitive. Preference will be given to students who are in their second year of law school, who are in the top 25% of their class, and who have significant writing experience, such as a law review or moot court.
The Clerkship Committee will forward the application materials of selected applicants to participating judges for final placement and acceptance decisions. You will be notified of your provisional acceptance into the program prior to registration, but final decisions will be made by judges and will not be made until after registration.
