Internships offered through the Executive Pathways Program are designed to focus on the professional development of students majoring in the areas of public policy, social work, law, statistics, and other related fields. The program’s goal is for students to have the opportunity to learn how public policy is developed and implemented within a large and complex government organization.
The Executive Pathways Internship Program focuses on building a diverse workforce by developing the talents of students as they prepare for professional employment.
Internships are generally during the summer and are located in the department’s Central Offices in Saint Paul. Placements begin in late May or early June.
Participants are able to work full-time, up to 400 hours, over the course of their internship.
Applicants must:
× Be a senior in an undergraduate program or enrolled in a graduate program of study in public administration, public health administration, social work, law, human services, political science, statistics, or another related area.
× Be in good academic standing in their field of study.
× Be a citizen or have permission to work in the United States.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services oversees the delivery of health and human services to more than half a million Minnesotans each year.
Students interning at DHS can gain experience related to health care, economic support, community mental health, family and children’s services, policy development and implementation, information system management and development, and services to seniors, people with disabilities and new Americans. Such experiences can provide a glimpse into how state, county and nonprofit organizations collaborate to ensure the department’s services are accessible for Minnesotans who are in need of the support.
Program goals:
× Contribute to the development of the students’ talents.
× Provide students with the opportunity to impact human services policies, learn the complexities of intergovernmental relationships, and gain insight into the process for obtaining employment within the state system.
× Open doors for participants to become permanent employees of the department
