Ropes & Gray has long been a proponent of law firm inclusion and diversity, with a dedicated mission to attract and retain outstanding lawyers of varied backgrounds. To further promote inclusion and diversity within the legal profession, the firm created the Roscoe Trimmier Jr. Diversity Scholarship, named after our beloved retired partner. Mr. Trimmier was the firm’s first African American partner and a leader of our efforts.
The award
This scholarship provides a $25,000 award to up to five outstanding second-year law students to offset the expenses of their legal education, and includes a paid summer associate position following completion of the second year of law school. The funds will be paid out half upon completion of the summer program, and half upon starting as a full-time associate at the firm.
The scholarship will be awarded to applicants who exemplify the accomplishment, leadership and dedication that were the hallmarks of Mr. Trimmier’s life, and who are members of populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession.
Criteria
In addition to meeting the rigorous academic and hiring criteria of Ropes & Gray’s entry-level recruiting program, successful applicants for the scholarship must show:
Demonstrated leadership ability
Genuine interest in Ropes & Gray’s practice
The personal statement that is part of the application process should address the applicant’s qualifications for the scholarship, including, potentially, a description of the applicant’s leadership qualities, exceptional contributions to community and commitment to the practice of law.

Outstanding undergraduate and law school academic achievement
Member of a historically underrepresented group in the legal profession
2L, enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school
