Minnesota Continuing Legal Education, a nationally recognized, award-winning CLE organization, is seeking candidates for the position of Publications Attorney & Legal Editor.
Publications Attorneys are responsible for project management, legal analysis, editing, research, and cite checking to ensure the quality and legal accuracy of a library of comprehensive legal reference books and complementary products. Responsibilities include timely publication project management, legal editing, supervision of law clerks, researchers, indexers, and volunteer editors and authors, and planning and employing completed publications as seminars.
Primary Responsibilities
- Recruit editors and authors.
- Plan and facilitate effective meetings with editors and authors.
- Oversee and communicate the workflow of deskbook projects through all stages, and work with authors and editors and coworkers to maintain project schedules and publishing deadlines.
- Evaluate manuscripts and identify problems. Ensure timely submissions of chapters. Organize, prepare, edit, and proof, legal publications, and review for logic, accuracy, tone, and audience. Ensure accuracy, comprehensiveness, clarity and consistency in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and conformance to style. Verify accuracy of citations, including websites.
- Perform online research and share new case law and legislation as it relates to each publication project.
- Oversee work of law clerks and other contract workers such as researchers, editors, and indexers.
- Work with desktop publishing department to prepare subject indexes and tables of authority, update instruction sheets, and forms for electronic distribution.
- Contribute to style guidelines for deskbooks and updates/supplements.
- Collaborate with other Program Attorneys on programs about or related to deskbooks and other CLE publication products
- Draft descriptive copy regarding book products for use in promotional materials.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding Minnesota CLE’s publication products and promote publications in person at Minnesota CLE seminars.
- Employ completed projects as seminars (includes planning, organizing, and running the programs).
- Perform additional duties and projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a licensed attorney in good standing. Students graduating in May 2019 are also eligible to apply.
- Must have excellent communication skills
- Must be able to ask questions and distill information across various practice areas
- Must be comfortable dealing directly with attorneys, judges and bar leaders with the ability to motivate and persuade diplomatically
- Must be able to run efficient and productive meetings
- Must have ability to maintain constructive long-term relationships
- Must be sensitive to organizational and interpersonal dynamics
- Must be able to prioritize tasks within multiple projects on different timelines
Annual salary range is $49,000 – $58,000 DOE.
