Consortium for Innovative Legal Education is pleased to announce some exciting news. Law students from across the country will have the opportunity to study with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor the week of July 6, 2020, in Prague, Czech Republic through the South Texas College of Law Houston study-abroad program.
Justice Sotomayor will be teaching a comparative study of the United States and European Supreme Courts. In this five-day program, students will examine the differences between the two systems including the structure of processing cases before courts; jurisdiction of the courts; standards of reviews in the lower court, executive, administrative, and congressional decisions; advocacy and best practices in oral and written presentations; and creating an ideal supreme court.
Approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), the Prague program is one of several international legal study abroad options available to law students through the Consortium for Innovative Legal Education (CILE), which includes California Western School of Law, New England Law | Boston, and Mitchell Hamline School of Law, in addition to STCL Houston. The Prague program also features international and comparative law courses taught by faculty members from CILE member schools.
In the past several years, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, and the late Justice Antonin G. Scalia also have taught in international study-abroad programs offered through CILE-affiliated schools in Prague, Czech Republic; London, England; Galway, Ireland; and Valletta, Malta.
How to register:
Applications will be accepted for this program starting on January 13. The deadline to apply is March 25, 2020. Enrollment is limited, and early application is advised.
Students must be in good standing to attend, and fall grades are considered when reviewing spring academic status. Priority application is given to all CILE schools—including South Texas students—until February 1, 2020, when enrollment will be open to any law student in good academic standing at an ABA-accredited law school.
