June 21 to July 28, 2021
What is Earth Law? Earth law describes the emerging body of law for protecting, restoring, and stabilizing the functional interdependency of Earth’s life and life-support systems at the local, bioregional, and global levels. Earth law may be expressed in constitutional, statutory, common law, and customary law, as well as in treaties and other agreements both public and private. In Earth Law the benefits, protections, and remedies of law are extended to nonhuman beings, animate and inanimate, in their own rights yet in respect of multiple relationships including humans.
Developing this field of law is of paramount importance to a just and verdant planet. Student interns will learn about movement lawyering.
The classes and reading material will include a critique of modern environmental and will introduce the origins and conceptual framework of Earth law. Specific topics include rights of nature, rights of future generations, ecocide, human environmental rights, biocultural rights, Indigenous legalities, and ecological governance.
The coursebook’s global survey of emerging Earth law will be woven through this pilot course.
