SUMMARY:
The Legislative Branch Summer Intern position is a part-time position within the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe tribal government. The Summer Intern performs administrative, clerical, and other duties as assigned by the Legislative Affairs Director. The Summer Intern will regularly collaborate and work with the Legislative Affairs Director, Legislative Counsel, and Revisor of Statutes. The Summer Intern is expected to work two (2) days per week for an eight-week period during the months of June, July, and August.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Career interest in the fields of government, legislative affairs, or tribal self-governance.
• Willingness to learn federal Indian and/or tribal law.
• Proficient writing, typing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.
• Microsoft Office proficiency.
• Awareness and sensitivity to the culture of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
• Band member preference applies.
• Must submit a completed Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Tribal Government Employment Application.
• Must submit an essay no longer than 1,000 words, explaining interest and aptitude for working in tribal government.
• Must sign the Summer Intern Agreement, requiring the Summer Intern to maintain confidentiality and to abide by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Personnel Policy and Procedures.
• Must provide two (2) personal or professional references.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Background investigation required that shows no theft or fraud above a misdemeanor, no felony convictions, and no sexual or crimes-against-a-person conviction at any level. Any pending criminal cases must be disclosed in writing, including the date of the charge, the jurisdiction where the charge took place, and the status of the case.
• Working hours are typically 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
• Local travel may be required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Organize and label files.
• Compose and edit official correspondence.
• Scan and store official records into a digital medium.
• Assist in the coordination and execution of meetings of the Band Assembly.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
