Wabasha County Attorney – Summer Law Clerk Position
*Remote Work is an Option*
30hr per week position for the Summer of 2022 (preferred start early May)
$20.00 per hour
Our active three attorney office here in beautiful bluff country is seeking justice driven 2L and 3L students interested in criminal law. This opportunity would allow our clerks to make daily court appearances, refine their writing skills while crafting briefs for the court, build connections with attorneys and judges, and develop an in depth understanding of criminal procedure.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of 1L year in good standing.
- Sincere interest in criminal law and justice driven outcomes.
- Strong writing skills.
- A desire to learn and grow as a student attorney.
- Certified as student attorney prior to start date
Preferred Qualifications:
- Notable coursework in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, and/or evidence
- Prior courtroom experience
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Strong public speaker
Duties:
- Appear on behalf of the State and advocate our position at daily hearings (arraignments, omnibus hearings, and admit/deny hearings for probation violations)
- Assist in the drafting of criminal complaints
- Draft briefs and conduct legal research as assigned
- When deemed appropriate, participate in contested hearings and question witnesses
- There may also be the opportunity to participate in a trial.
