The first district court case handled by Mitchell Hamline’s Medical-Legal Partnership with United Family Medicine was a success. The client was granted custody of his young son and successfully petitioned for third-party custody of the boy’s adolescent sister. The family unit had been through intense social upheaval because of the mother’s substance abuse problems. Convincing the court to keep the children together with their primary caregiver, instead of moving the girl to live with her biological father, was of utmost importance during this tumultuous time. Jada Fehn, and the MLP partners, are extremely grateful to F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Saint Paul Foundation, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation for the financial support to make this success possible.
The first of its kind here in Minnesota, Mitchell Hamline’s Health Law Institute and United Family Medicine, a community-based clinic providing comprehensive, patient-centered primary care to low-income and medically underserved patients, launched a medical-legal partnership in the fall of 2014.
