Michael L. Murphy graduated with honors from the Indian Law Program at William Mitchell College of Law in the spring of 2012. During law school, he served as the Fundraising Chair and Community Outreach Chair for the school’s Native American Law School Association, competed in two NNALSA Moot Courts, interned for the United States Department of the Interior, Field Solicitor’s Office, and volunteered for the Minnesota Justice Foundation.
Michael received the 2012-2013 Fulbright Scholarship Grant in Law to Papua New Guinea. In PNG, he served as a co-mediator and translator and conducted research on customary dispute resolution for the PNG Supreme and National Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Center. After returning stateside, he served as a public defender for the Regional Native Public Defense Corporation, which represents White Earth and Leech Lake members facing criminal charges in state court.
Currently, Michael is an attorney at The Jacobson Law Group, a firm located in St. Paul that provides legal services to Indian tribes and their business partners. His practice centers on serving tribal governments by providing counsel on a variety of matters, including daily governance, economic development, code development, real estate, and civil litigation. He continues to work on alternative dispute resolution initiatives for tribal courts and other dispute resolution forums.
