Doug Blanke and Mike Freiberg of the Public Health Law Center took part in a White House conference on the Obama Administration’s proposal to eliminate smoking in America’s low income public housing. The meeting was at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., and included HUD Secretary Julián Castro and U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.

Doug Blanke of the Public Health Law Center was quoted in the Feb. 9, 2016 Wall Street Journal (“Saltshaker Warnings Get Their Day in Court”) and the Feb. 15, 2016 Star Tribune (“Salt Shaker Emoji Sparks a Menu Fight Over Free Speech”) about litigation challenging a new food safety warning in New York, where restaurants must display a salt shaker icon next to those menu items containing more sodium than is recommended in an entire day. The Center filed an amicus brief in the case, on behalf of the American Heart Association and others. The law was upheld by the trial court on February 24, and the National Restaurant Association — the “NRA” — has appealed.

Professor Laura Hermer’s paper “‘Health’ and ‘Welfare’ in Medicaid § 1115 Waivers,” won as the accepted paper from a call for submissions to speak at the January 2016 AALS meeting in New York City. She presented the paper at AALS on January 8. The paper will also be published in a forthcoming issue of the St. Louis University Journal of Health Law and Policy.

Professor Laura Hermer gave an invited Grand Rounds presentation to the Mayo’s Department of Anesthesiology in Rochester, MN. The title of the presentation was “The Affordable Care Act after King v. Burwell.” She gave a second presentation that same day to the Department of Anesthesiology’s residents on the Affordable Care Act.

Professor Pope previously served as a legal consultant on two other official ATS documents.
