“I graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in 2000. I had a very diverse legal background practicing in insurance defense (asbestos litigation, construction defect, and dram shop), property law, and criminal law in Minnesota. After litigating for 13 years, I wanted to change my career while still using my legal skills. Therefore, I enrolled in the Online Health Care Compliance Certificate Program at Hamline Law. Prior to obtaining my Certificate in May 2014, I was offered, and accepted, a position as the corporate compliance officer with a hospice in Titusville, FL.
The program has impacted my career in that I have moved out of Minnesota where I lived just about my whole life. My experience with the Program was great. Professor Colombo was extremely helpful to me personally. At the end of Fall semester, I met with Professor Colombo where she spent over an hour helping me change my resume to fit my professional background with the health care compliance field. Furthermore, she advised me on how I can break into the health care field since I had no prior experience, which is how I obtained my current position. Finally, I reached out on several occasions to the other faculty members when I had questions on the topics or assignments and they were always willing to help.
My cohort was also very approachable. During the oncampus orientation, I discovered that one of my classmates was a lawyer from Jackson, Mississippi, and I had relatives that lived near her. Due to this connection, throughout the year, she and I would call, email, and text each other whenever we had a question on homework or the material. This assistance really helped me during the Program. Finally, another classmate of mine was from Orlando, FL. Since I now live just one hour away, I stay in regular contact with her and have even borrowed her “bootcamp” notes to help me prepare for the CHC Exam in Orlando.”
