Michael Flower ’13 is an associate attorney in the workers’ compensation litigation department with Arthur, Chapman, Kettering, Smetak, & Pikala. His current responsibilities include drafting settlement agreements, preparing analysis and strategy on claim files, taking depositions, negotiating disputed claims with interveners, and attending judicial conferences. Eventually, he will be expected to handle claim files from start to finish. While this isn’t a position that is specifically health law related, it does require a working knowledge of how health systems work, how health care providers and insurer’s work with workers’ compensation related disputes, and reviewing medical records frequently. In addition to that, Arthur Chapman has a firm emphasis on education in the community and with clients that focuses not only on workers’ compensation matters, but also compliance matters. “The HLI, with the Health Law and Compliance Certificate courses, provided a very specific experience to fields that are intertwined with work I am involved in. Arthur Chapman recognized some of the transferable skills and knowledge I had from that field, and I feel like that helped me in getting my foot in the door for my initial interview.
