This CLE will provide an overview of federal, state, and local laws relating to food
labeling, including nutrition facts panel disclosures, calorie disclosures and warnings
on menus, claims made on labels, and other labeling issues. Presenters will explain
how these laws developed, highlight the constitutional issues they implicate, and
summarize the peer-reviewed scientific research around food labeling and to what
extent they impact consumer behavior. The presenters will discuss the role of science,
as well as touching on how evolving First Amendment jurisprudence, preemption, and
politics impact current labeling debates.
