On December 8, 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) adopted a Rule – available on the Federal Register – detailing requirements for registration under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). The Rule becomes effective January 7, 2022.
A proposed version of the Rule, nearly identical to the final Rule adopted by the DOJ, was posted on August 13, 2020 soliciting public comment. The DOJ received over 700 comments on this rulemaking from individuals and organizations, many of which were acknowledged and discussed by the Attorney General in the lengthy preamble accompanying the revised text of title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations part 72.
Additional information about SORNA from the Justice Department’s Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (“SMART Office”) can be found here.
